Have you been sidelined with pain or other symptoms for years now, unable to live the life you want?
Or perhaps you’ve been navigating gut symptoms, fatigue, insomnia, inflammation, or other symptoms your doctor hasn’t been able to help with.
Maybe you’ve searched for relief with physical therapy, injections, or mind-body practices — without lasting success.

Though it may sometimes feel like it, you’re not alone on this journey. It’s hard to find answers when chronic pain is so complex, involving so much more than your physical body.

For relief that lasts a lifetime, you must treat pain at the source — resolving pain pathways in your brain and body.

Leading pain experts Dr. Howard Schubiner, MD and Hal Greenham created their revolutionary evidence-based program to help you unhook from the devastating loop of chronic pain…

The techniques and tools you’ll learn and use in this program include diagnostic mechanisms like self-inventories and self-assessments, as well as quizzes, writing exercises, guided visualizations, affirmations, and more. They’re based on the latest published Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET) research and a combined 40+ years of clinical experience.

This program is delivered with expertise and compassion, informed by Howard and Hal’s own experiences with chronic pain. They’re passionate about these modalities they’ve seen change their patients’ lives time and again — even in the most difficult cases that other doctors deemed hopeless.

The truth is that the vast majority of chronic pain is no longer a medical mystery. It’s a brain process that’s highly treatable. This comprehensive program takes the mystery and fear out of the pain equation. You can access the tools to turn this around.

What People Are Saying About Howard Schubiner & Hal Greenham…

“I experienced a massive drop in my pain levels. I felt like I had finally turned the corner with my chronic pain.”

I initially developed repetitive strain injury RSI-type pain in my wrists from typing and computer use while writing up my Phd. It manifested as strong pain right through both my wrists whenever I typed or used my wrists for normal activities. It eventually got so bad that I could not do any typing at all, or do daily activities like holding a cup of tea, driving, or brushing my teeth without strong pain…
The real turning point came when I started doing one-on-one sessions with Hal. Working with Hal really opened my eyes to the connection between my pain and unexpressed anger from my past…
It was a difficult process, but hugely rewarding. After only four sessions I experienced a massive drop in my pain levels. I felt like I had finally turned the corner with my chronic pain. On top of that, I felt like I had released some old emotional burdens — I felt lighter and happier.
— Danny, Coburg VIC

“My 30 years of back pain is now a non-issue.”

I suffered chronic low back pain for 30 years and had reached the point of giving up on any chance of healing, living with average pain levels of 8/10 and relying on painkillers which were becoming less and less effective.
Over these years I had seen numerous back specialists and other medical practitioners, who all said my pain was caused by a prolapsed disc. I even had surgery, a number of back injections, physio work, acupuncture, and a host of other treatments which I won’t even mention here. Nothing helped…
Seeing Hal was a game-changer. Being only one of a handful of psychotherapists in Australia aware of Mind-Body Syndrome, I decided to give it a go. Hal was able to help guide me back to a normal life again. He has been instrumental in teaching me how to get in touch with repressed emotions which is the key to eliminating TMS and the chronic pain it causes. In a matter of a few months, my life was turned around.
My 30 years of back pain is now a non-issue — I am exercising regularly, riding my bike for the first time in 15 years, and even able to enjoy the cinema or theater while sitting for hours and not feel any pain.
— Jim, VIC

“I did not know if I would run or even sit without pain again; now I feel unstoppable.”

My foot pain, and then a year later my back pain, began as I was training during the summer for soccer — undoubtedly the most physically and mentally exhausting training of my life. Although I was killing myself six days a week trying to follow the team workout program flawlessly, I still feared that I would be unready for the season, and I obsessed about performing perfectly on the upcoming team fitness test…
Additionally, I had begun experiencing excruciating stomach cramps after each meal. Pretty soon, nearly everything I ate left me doubled over in pain…
Knowing that I had nothing to lose, I made an appointment to see Dr. Schubiner, who proceeded to diagnose me with tension myoneural syndrome (TMS).
The following day I swam harder than I had in several months without any pain. Just knowing that my pain was not an actual physical problem changed everything…
Dr. Schubiner has given me my life back. At 19 years old, I did not know if I would run or even sit without pain again; now I feel unstoppable. I am back to playing soccer and working out several times a week. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Schubiner for helping me beat TMS and reclaim the active lifestyle I cherish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the program based on?

The program is based on the latest published EAET research (read our science page) plus the combined 25 years of clinical experience of Dr Schubiner (FACP, Professor of Medicine, medical doctor) and Hal Greenham (BSc Psych, somatic psychotherapist and specialist in pain psychotherapy).

What does biopsychosocial mean?

Biopsychosocial treatments address the biological, psychological and social aspects of a condition.

You talk about “mindbody treatment” so are you saying the pain is all in my head?

No, all pain is real, and we’ve been through chronic pain personally ourselves. What we’re saying is that a more accurate understanding of the cause of persistent pain for most people is the neuropsychological process of central sensitisation, or what Dr John Sarno described as TMS. As more is known about the use of medical imaging to understand pain, evidence points towards scans not being well correlated with pain. Medicine’s over reliance on painkiller prescriptions has led to the painkiller and opioid epidemics which are causing enormous harm to people and communities. By treating the brain using the mind, we are usually able to help people improve or recover without drugs or surgery.

I have a structural problem so can this program still help me?

If you have back or other musculoskeletal pain without showing neurological signs of nerve impairment it’s likely this program will be helpful. It’s also effective in many cases where scans have shown degenerative changes or bulging discs. The latest medical evidence is showing a poor relationship between these kinds of changes, and chronic pain. This program is effective at making the neurological, mental and emotional shifts which are usually required to overcome chronic pain.

As per our list of conditions treated this is usually not an appropriate treatment for pain from autoimmune disease, cancer or nerve injury, unless there is a comorbidity of a mindbody symptom with the organic condition.

You are always welcome to ask us if this is likely to be useful for you.

Is this medicare funded treatment?

At present this innovative treatment is not funded by medicare but we are working to get this changed as soon as we can. If you share our passion to get this treatment out to everyone who needs it regardless of their financial circumstances, and can help with relevant contacts in health or medicine, or social enterprise investment, please get in touch and join our advocacy effort!

Why didn't my doctor tell me about this treatment?

Most doctors who completed their training over 5 years ago may not be aware of the latest pain neuroscience and default to older treatment approaches. Freedom From Chronic Pain is an innovative treatment program based on the latest EAET research which some doctors may not know about. Please tell them about it and discuss if it could be suitable for you.

Do I need a referral from my doctor to do the program?

You don’t need a referral but you do need to be seen by a doctor before starting the program to ensure your pain is not from another underlying condition.

How much does it cost?

Please scroll to the bottom of the home page to see our programs and costs.

I’m on a low income, can I get a discount?

We do offer payment plans and in some cases discounts to make the treatment accessible. We are a self funded social enterprise without government support so we do need to ensure our own sustainability, but we strive to make it accessible to people who need it.

What are the terms of the money back guarantee?

We are really confident that if you do the work contained in the program you will see results. We think a fair offer is that, if you have worked sincerely with the materials for somewhere between 6-12 months, and you are not happy with your results we will happily refund your money. Please note the refund offered is on the program component and not the practitioner time.

How many people have asked for their money back so far?

Approximately 2% of participants.
